Notes
- There will be inconsistency between my numbers and “official” team man-games lost (MGL) figures due to teams' different reporting standards
- Injury absence data I have used comes from puckpedia.com, cbssports.com and historically from the former capfriendly.com, tsn.ca and (prior to 2008/09) sportsforecaster.com
- Figures generally exclude minor league players (at my subjective discretion) who are often on teams’ IR lists at the start of each season, but include anyone who gets injured while on the active roster during the season
- Illnesses are included, but healthy scratches, suspensions, and absences due to “personal reasons” are excluded
- “Retired” players still under contract (anyone who missed the whole year and has not played since, even if informal retirement had not been acknowledged at the time) are also listed
- Seasons (or stints with teams within a season) with no games missed to injury are not shown, i.e. only the periods of absences produce a row in the chart
- The shaded sections to the right are the playoffs (banded by series), including the extended section in 2019/20 representing the round robin or preliminary round games
- Some continuous absences are displayed with breaks, e.g. where a playoff series did not run to seven games, between regular seasons in 2012/13, 2019/20 and 2020/21 and the playoffs, between the end of one season and the start of the next - missed game totals are displayed as discrete absences for the purposes of this chart
